Janet opened the door, and Scamper disappeared, barking in delight. The meeting went on, and after everyone had promised to keep their eyes open and report anyone acting suspiciously, or looking like the thief, Peter declared the meeting closed.

'Almost twelve o'clock,' he said, looking at his watch. ' My word, how the time goes when we talk and talk! Well, good luck, everyone - and be sure to report anything interesting.'

He and Janet walked back to the house, Peter carrying the empty cups. 'A jolly good meeting, wasn't it?' he said. 'Jack's missing something interesting -1 bet he wishes he hadn't walked out on us!'

'Where's Scamper?' said Janet. 'SCAMPER! SCAMPER! The meeting's over, Scamper! Here, Scamper. Here! Come along!'

No Scamper appeared, and something cold seemed suddenly to clutch at Janet's heart. She stood quite still, and looked at Peter, fear on her face. * Peter!' she said, in a half-whisper. 'Why doesn't Scamper come? Oh, Peter . . .'

'Ass! I suppose you think somebody came along and cleverly stole him while we sat in the shed,' said Peter. 'Just Like that! Without a bark or a whimper
